As the descent, begins I hold onto one truth: I am more than what they would make of me

Emmett Atwater thought Babel’s game sounded easy. Now Emmett and the rest of the Genesis survivors must rally and forge their own path through a new world. Their mission from Babel is simple: extract nyxia, the most valuable material in the universe, and play nice with the indigenous Adamite population.

Read my review of the first book in the series here!

I was absolutely blown away when I read Reintgen’s debut novel, Nyxia, last year. Make no mistake, Nyxia Unleashed is a good, solid book in it’s own right, but it didn’t live up to how absolutely incredible Nyxia was. What I loved about the first book was how it was about being human, about being betrayed and being angry and loss and love and life. Nyxia was beautiful and passionate and tragically human. Nyxia Unleashed is about aliens and conspiracy plots.

It’s a clever book. Emmett has landed on Eden after the shocking events of the end of the previous book. He has to find the other Genesis children and get to work mining Nyxia. But as usual, Babel has a few tricks up their sleeves and they aren’t the only ones. The  native Adamite population, who call themselves the Imago, are openly friendly and welcoming, but Emmett can’t shake the sense that there is something weird going on here. And of course, he’s right.

We’re weapons. They made us this way. And we’re coming for them.

I knew going in that Nyxia Unleashed would be about the Imago going in, and not about the competition and the rivalries that gripped me in the first book. But I expected something just a little bit more. I wanted weird and bizarre and eerie foreign landscapes. I wanted a species that felt distinctly alien. I wanted grief and passion and all the emotion that the Nyxia made me feel. Nyxia Unleashed made me feel curious and intrigued but it didn’t sustain the love I felt more Emmett. I did like that Morning had a whole lot more page time in this book!

In comparison to the first book, Nyxia Unleashed was a three star book. Considered on it’s own merits, it’s four. If you don’t go into this book expecting the same tone as the first, you’ll have a grand time!
